Inspired by her Egyptian, Turkish, and German heritage, Nejla Yatkin creates dances where “undulations of the torso, sinuous arms, plastic poses, and rhythmic sensitivity find a place alongside classical and contemporary modern dance theater” (The Washington Post). Recently named one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to watch in 2005,” Yatkin’s work has been commissioned and presented by Dance Place (DC), the Joyce Theater (NY), the Kennedy Center (DC), and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, among other places. Her new, evening-length work, De/Reconstructing Mata Hari deals with constructions of femininity, exoticism and transgression.

The new work is co-commissioned by Miami Dade College, Center for Cultural Collaborations International; the National Performance Network and Dance Place. This work is part of a larger effort to create reciprocal production and touring support for South Florida and D.C. performing artists
